Hot Shots vs Private Lessons vs Holiday Camps: The Parent's Guide to Junior Tennis at the Tennis Courts in Matraville

Hot Shots lessons run at Heffron Park Tennis Centre in Matraville.

If you've started looking at tennis courts in Matraville for your child, you've probably noticed that Heffron Park Tennis Centre offers more than one way in: Hot Shots group classes, one-on-one private lessons and school holiday camps. All three run at the same site, 417–439 Bunnerong Road, but they suit different kids, different budgets and different times of the school year, and picking the wrong one first is an easy way to lose a child's interest before it sticks. Here's what each option involves, what it costs and how to work out which one fits your family right now.

The Tennis Courts in Matraville, and Why Term 4 Is a Good Time to Decide

Heffron Park Tennis Centre is a Randwick Council facility operated by Sydney Sports Management Group. The site has 10 tennis courts (four acrylic hard courts and six synthetic grass courts), all outdoors, plus on-site parking, a pro shop and a kiosk serving barista-made coffee. It's open Monday to Thursday 7am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 7am to 9pm and Sunday 7am to 8:30pm.

Term 4 for NSW public schools runs from 13 October to 17 December 2026, and the summer school holidays start the next day. That makes it a natural moment to choose a starting point. Hot Shots group lessons can be joined at any time in the calendar year (subject to availability), so there's no need to wait for a fresh term, and the holiday camps are there to fill the summer break.

Three Ways In: What Each One Is Like

All three are coached by the Heffron Park team, but the format, the price and the commitment differ. Start with the one that matches what you want for your child right now.

1

Hot Shots group lessons

From $24/week

Hot Shots is Tennis Australia's national junior program, not a Heffron Park invention, which is worth knowing if you're comparing providers. It uses modified courts and balls so children can rally sooner, and the courts scale up to full size as kids progress, as Tennis Australia explains. At Heffron Park it covers ages 3 to 12, with squad lessons for older juniors, and children are grouped by age and ability.

Lessons are booked and paid in advance by fortnightly direct debit, a free trial lesson is available, and there's a published timetable on the Kids Tennis page.

2

Private lessons

$130 per 60 min

One-on-one, coach-led sessions built around a player's own goals, whether that's a specific stroke, extra confidence or simply not being ready for a group. They suit all ages and abilities, and early morning, daytime and evening times are available. A single 60-minute lesson is $130, a 5-pack is $585 and a 10-pack is $1,040, and you can ask about 30 and 45-minute options on the Private Lessons page.

Private lessons are the most flexible option on days and times, and the most expensive per hour of coaching, so they tend to work best as an add-on to a group class or for a child who isn't ready for a group.

3

Holiday tennis camps

From $70 a day

Camps run during school holidays for children aged 4 to 14 at all ability levels, with kids grouped with peers. A full day (9:00am to 3:00pm) is $90, a half day (9:00am to 12:30pm) is $70, a full five-day week is $330, and after care from 3:00pm to 6:00pm is $16. Single-day, multi-day and weekly bookings are all possible.

A typical day covers skills and drills, then point play and match play, then multi-sport games, and each camp week ends with a complimentary BBQ and a round robin with trophies. Camps run rain, hail or shine, with indoor activities in bad weather. Details and booking are on the Holiday Camps page; ask the centre for upcoming camp dates.

Hot Shots Weekly Prices by Stage

Hot Shots is a pathway rather than a single class. Kinder Tennis is a parent-and-child class that builds motor skills, balance and socialisation. Launch Pad is the foundation stage, with a big emphasis on fun. Red Ball introduces basic rally play on modified courts, and Orange Ball moves into singles and doubles with a 50% compression ball. The Green and Yellow stages build toward full-court play and match play, and Squad lessons are recommended for children aged 11 and over.

How to Enrol: A Step-by-Step

  1. 1Decide the format that matches your goal. Ongoing weekly progression (Hot Shots), flexible one-on-one attention (private lessons), or a school-break block (holiday camps).
  2. 2Enquire with your child's age and experience. Call (02) 9093 6390 or email heffronpark@ssmgroup.com.au and say how old your child is, whether they've played before and what you want most, whether that's confidence, skills, fun or match-play readiness.
  3. 3Book the free trial. It's optional but recommended, because it lets your child experience a session and lets you confirm the right stage before committing.
  4. 4Choose a session time. Hot Shots has a published timetable through the booking system. If you're unsure which class to pick, enquire first so you don't waste time switching later. Private lessons are arranged through the centre, and camps are booked online.
  5. 5Email your Active Kids Voucher before you register. If you're eligible, send it through first so the $50 discount can be applied.
  6. 6Enrol and set up payments. Hot Shots lessons are booked and paid for in advance through fortnightly direct debit, so there's no need to find a lump sum up front.

Common Mistakes Parents Make

  1. 1Assuming Hot Shots is one single class. It's a multi-stage pathway from Kinder Tennis through to Squad, and the wrong stage can bore an advanced child or overwhelm a beginner. Coaches help place your child.
  2. 2Starting a first-timer with private lessons only. Private lessons are excellent for targeted skill work, but a beginner can miss the group environment and the stage-by-stage pathway that Hot Shots offers.
  3. 3Thinking you have to wait for a new term. Children can join Hot Shots group lessons at any time in the calendar year, subject to availability.
  4. 4Registering before emailing the voucher. The centre asks you to email your Active Kids Voucher before you register, so don't leave it until after enrolment.
  5. 5Leaving the membership question too late. Junior membership is $30 a month, but as of October 2026 memberships are at capacity, so ask about the waitlist early.

Membership, Vouchers and Discounts

Heffron Park's junior membership (under 17) is $30 per month by direct debit. It includes free off-peak casual court hire, a reduced hire rate of $24 per hour after 5pm on weekdays and all weekend, 20% off tennis programs (excluding private lessons), 20% off internal competition entry fees, 10% off merchandise and free table tennis hire. Pickleball isn't included. As of October 2026, memberships are at capacity and new members join a waitlist through the membership page.

The Active Kids Voucher takes $50 off Hot Shots enrolment, and you email it to the centre before you register. The NSW Government program is now called the Active and Creative Kids Voucher. It's worth $50, available twice a year to families receiving Family Tax Benefit for children aged 4.5 to 18, and Voucher 1 for 2026 has to be used by 31 December 2026. You can check eligibility and apply through Service NSW.
