Learn Tennis as an Adult — Small Group Coaching in Matraville, All Levels Welcome
Small group coaching for adults who want to learn, improve, and play consistently in a structured, friendly environment.
Whether you’ve never held a racquet, used to play years ago and want to get back into it, or you’re a regular player looking to sharpen your technique, there is a session designed for you.
Each lesson runs for 90 minutes and is led by a qualified tennis coach. Sessions are kept small — up to eight players across two courts — so your coach can give you individual attention rather than just running a general drill rotation.
This program is for adults who want to:
- Pick up tennis as a new sport or hobby in a welcoming, non-intimidating environment
- Meet other people in the Matraville, Randwick, Kingsford, and Botany area who enjoy sport
- Improve their technique with structured coaching rather than just hitting around
- Find a regular weekly activity that is both physically active and genuinely social
You don’t need to own a racquet. You don’t need a partner. And you don’t need to arrive already fit or coordinated — every adult in the beginner group started in exactly the same position.
Got kids of your own? They can start out in our Kids Tennis program, or if it’s school holidays, book them into our Holiday Tennis Camps while you take your own lesson a whole family thing.
What People Are Saying About Us:
What Is Adult Group Tennis and Who Is It For?
Small groups mean real, individual feedback. With no more than eight adults per session across two courts, your coach isn’t just feeding balls down the middle. They’re watching your grip, correcting your footwork, and giving you specific feedback every session — not just general group tips.
Levels are kept separate, so you’re always on the right court. Beginner sessions are genuinely for beginners. You won’t be outpaced by players who’ve been competing for years. Intermediate sessions challenge players who already have a foundation. The schedule is structured so you can find your level and progress through it at your own pace.
It builds into a real community. Many adults who start in the Monday or Wednesday beginner sessions go on to play Social Tennis on Tuesday nights and eventually enter the club competition. There’s always a natural next step — and familiar faces along the way. This isn’t a drop-in class; it’s a consistent weekly group.
The facility is properly set up for adult tennis. Ten courts, a fully equipped pro shop, barista-made coffee at the kiosk, covered seating, and change rooms with club facilities. Heffron Park is a full tennis centre managed by Randwick Council and operated by Sydney Sports Management Group — not a makeshift setup.
The Three Stages of Adult Group Coaching
New to tennis, or returning after a long break. Sessions focus on the fundamentals: racquet grip, court positioning, making consistent contact with the ball, and basic serving. The emphasis is on building confidence and making each session enjoyable — not overwhelming you with technique from day one. Monday 7:00pm · Wednesday 7:30pm · Saturday 12:00pm
Some beginner experience; ready for more match-like tennis. This stage bridges the gap between foundation lessons and actual match play. Players work on consistency under pressure, court positioning, and the tactical basics that apply in a real game situation. 📅 Saturday 10:30am
Can sustain a rally; ready to refine technique and tactics. Intermediate sessions cover more advanced stroke work, shot selection, movement patterns, and tactical decision-making. Players at this stage often also join Match Play clinics or the adult competition. 📅 Thursday 7:30pm · Friday 7:00pm

How to Be Part of Our Adult Group Tennis Program
Review the three stages above — Beginner, Competition Beginner, or Intermediate — and identify where you fit. If you’re genuinely unsure, don’t guess. Call us first and we’ll give you a straight recommendation based on your experience.
Check the schedule under each stage and find a time that works for your week. Most players settle into one consistent session per week, which is where you’ll make the most steady progress.
Single casual sessions can be booked online. For lesson packs, direct debit, or any questions before you book, call us on (02) 9093 6390 or email heffronpark@ssmgroup.com.au.
Arrive a few minutes before your session starts. Wear comfortable athletic clothing and flat-soled shoes — court shoes are ideal over time, but standard running shoes are fine to begin with. Racquets are available at the pro shop if you need one.
After a few sessions, your coach will give you a sense of where you’re at and what to focus on next. Social Tennis on Tuesday nights is a natural complement to your coaching sessions — more court time in a relaxed format, with the same community.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Beginner sessions are designed specifically for adults who have never played, or who haven’t played in a long time. You start with the basics and build at a pace that suits you. Everyone in the beginner group starts from the same point.
Not for your first session. Let us know you’re coming and we can discuss options. The pro shop stocks racquets at a range of price points if you decide to buy one. For ongoing sessions, having your own racquet is recommended but not mandatory from day one.
A maximum of eight adults per session, across two courts. This keeps the coach-to-player ratio low enough that your coach can give individual feedback every session — not just watch from a distance.
Yes. Single casual sessions are available at $48.
If you’ve never played, or haven’t played in years, start with Beginner. If you can already serve and sustain a rally, Intermediate may suit you better. If you’re not sure, call us on (02) 9093 6390 and we’ll advise you directly — it’s a short conversation.
The weekly direct debit at $35 per week is the best value for players who plan to attend consistently. The 10-lesson pack at $440 works well for players who want flexibility in timing without paying the full casual rate each time.
No. Group lessons are built around skill development, not fitness. You’ll move around and your heart rate will go up, but there’s no fitness benchmark to meet. Many adults find their fitness improves naturally once they’re playing regularly.
Comfortable athletic clothing and flat-soled shoes. Dedicated court shoes are ideal over time, but standard running shoes are fine to start with. Avoid heavily treaded soles such as trail runners or hiking shoes — these can damage the synthetic grass courts.
Yes. Contact us directly and we’ll put you in the same session. Starting with someone you know makes the first few sessions considerably more comfortable and is a common way adults join the program.
